The Negotiator believe Click Above's latest rooftop 'airspace' development is the first to be completed since the Government said it wanted to expand the sector.
A developer in London has completed the first modular ‘airspace’ development to be built since the government announced six months ago that it was to relax ‘permitted development rules’ to allow existing buildings to have residential ‘top floors’ added.
Called Corben Mews and located in South London within Battersea’s Nine Elms regeneration area, it is the first development of its kind to be finished since the announcement was made, and units are now being offered for sale.
Pioneered by planners in London, ‘airspace’ new homes are rooftop storeys added to existing high-rise developments.
The government’s recent consultation said: “We propose a new permitted development right to extend certain existing buildings upwards to provide additional, well designed, new homes to meet local housing need.
“National planning policy is clear that to support housing delivery we should make effective use of previously developed land and buildings, including the airspace above existing buildings, to create new homes.”
A spokesperson for Corben Mews’ developer told The Negotiator that although Corben Mews is modest, it is a harbinger of change within the new homes market.
Built by Click Above, it includes two penthouses constructed on the 4th floor of an existing residential development.
